Working LocallyWorking Locally For Regional and National Energy Solutions ETA is working to create the next evolution of our nation's electric transmission grid, connecting wind-rich states, such as Kansas and Oklahoma, to high demand areas within the region. Experience and innovation as transmission leaders are just part of our story. Demonstrated success working with communities to build transmission lines is what our reputation is built on. To crystallize our vision of an interstate transmission highway, we work with local utility partners to navigate and streamline relationships with all key stakeholders, from regulators to community leaders and neighbors. Through these partners, we strive to minimize the disturbances caused by these lines on three levels-- globally, locally and individually. Globally, we work to identify the best route. Locally, we work with officials and agencies to find out what's important. Individually, we work one-on-one with property owners to locate the line, accommodating affected individuals as best as we can. Our designs further demonstrate our commitment. Extra-high-voltage lines require an easement of just two hundred feet, the same as some transmission lines that carry half the energy of a 765-kV line. And, once in service, AEP has pioneered a unique wire configuration that reduces audible noise from the line. We also use non-reflective materials, including steel and wire, to lessen the visual impact. Simply stated, 765-kV lines are efficient. They make efficient use of land. Building 765-kV lines reduces the need to build smaller lines that would ultimately take more rights of way. They are efficient to build; they require less material than building multiple lines. And they are electrically efficient; reduced line losses from transmitting power at extra high voltages are tremendous. ETA’s Commitment to Working Locally Take a look at how ETA is already working with local partners to ensure that the interests of local and regional stakeholders are reflected in our projects. Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC -- ETA is working with Westar Energy Inc., the largest utility in the state, to pave the way for an expansion of renewable generation in Kansas and within the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). Prairie Wind Transmission is proposing to build approximately 110 miles of extra-high voltage 765-kilovolt transmission facilities linking a new 765/345-kV substation near Wichita, KS to a new 765/345-kV substation northeast of Medicine Lodge, KS, near the new Flat Ridge Wind Farm jointly owned by Westar Energy and BP Alternative, and then south to the Kansas/Oklahoma border. The project will provide enhanced electricity transport in Kansas and support expansion of renewable electricity generation in the region. Tallgrass Transmission, LLC – ETA is working with OGE Energy Corp., to build approximately 170 miles of extra-high voltage 765-kilovolt (kV) transmission from the Kansas-Oklahoma border north of Woodward, Okla., which will link into OGE’s station at Woodward and then extend west into the Oklahoma panhandle to a new station that will be built near Guymon, Okla. ETA, in partnership with these two local utilities, has the experience, ability and financial resources to work effectively with all stakeholders toward the successful completion of this important undertaking.
